Getting Over Redundancy

by | 28.11.24

Unfortunately the buzz word at the moment is ‘redundancy’ as more and more employers are being forced by economics to let staff go. Having experienced redundancy myself I know how damaging it can be to confidence, motivation and focus. However I also know how you can get over the initial damage and here are some tips:

Allow yourself to grieve

It is normal to feel a range of emotions after being made redundant including sadness, anger or disappointment. Allow yourself to process these emotions and give yourself time to grieve the loss of your job.

Stay Positive

While it may be difficult, try to stay positive and focus on the fact that this is an opportunity for a fresh start. Look at the redundancy as a chance to explore new opportunities and find a job that is a better fit for you.

Seek Help

Reach out to friends and family for emotional support during this challenging time. Talking about your feelings and what you have experienced can help you process them and move forward.

Update your CV and get job hunting

Update your CV and start looking for a new job. Take advantage of online job boards, networking events, career fairs and employment agencies like ourselves. Look everywhere you can to increase your chances of finding a new position.

Consider learning new skills

This period of unemployment could be the ideal time to update or improve your skills. Look for courses that could gain you better skills or more qualifications that will make you more marketable to potential employers.

Stay busy

Keep yourself busy, don’t bury yourself under your duvet or sit like a zombie watching day time television – do something. Get out and help in a Charity shop or a local school if you fancy it but above all be active.

Keep in touch with old workmates

Stay in touch with your former workmates, they may be able to provide support, advice or even job leads. Networking can also help you uncover hidden job opportunities and expand your professional connections.

Believe in Yourself

Remember that being made redundant does not define your worth or your abilities. Stay optimistic and believe in yourself and your ability to find a new job and succeed in your career.

Redundancy does not mean the end of a road, it means the start of a new road, look at me, I went from working for someone and making them lots of money to working for myself and making my own success, so go for it look as this time as a period for opportunity not the end of the line.
