Six Ways to Impress During your Probation Period:

by | 22.01.19

Probation periods are used to help employers identify whether or not they made the right decision offering you a job – so if you don’t make a good impression you’ll most likely find yourself jobless once again. To aid you in your bid to impress your new employer we’ve listed several tips that will really help you demonstrate why you’re the perfect employee.

Be eager to learn

Throughout your probation period one of the best ways to make a good impression is to constantly demonstrate how eager you are to learn new skills and ways of working. So always remember to show enthusiasm and never be scared to ask questions, no matter how silly you think they may be.

Learn from others

Pick up on the positive behaviour of those around you and try to mimic what they do. For example, if you notice everyone emptying the shredder when it’s full you should do the same. These little things you pick up will really help impress your new Manager – don’t pick up on bad behaviour though!

Don’t pull a sickie or be late

Employers want reliable staff who will always turn up for work – so going off sick during your probation period will set alarm bells off in your manager’s head. If you are ill pop some pills and have a long hot shower – most of the time you’ll feel a lot better once you’ve actually left the house. Never be late either – no one likes a bad timekeeper.

Don’t book a holiday

The last thing you should be thinking about when you start a new role is when you’ll next be getting some time off. If you really do need to book time off or a holiday, wait and book it after the end of your probation period.

Stay of other websites

The last thing you want to do during your employment is to get caught stalking your ex on Facebook or browsing through ASOS whilst your supposed to be doing work – it really won’t make a good impression. So don’t risk it – stay off all non-work related websites and do not make personal phone calls.

Don’t complain

One of the worst things you could do during your first few weeks is complain about anything. Keep all negative thoughts and feelings to yourself – no one wants to work with a Debbie Downer!!
