Do’s and Don’t’s For Your Job Search
When you’re looking for a new job it pays to concentrate on what you can control. You can’t make the perfect job opportunity appear, or influence an employer when they are reviewing CV’s, or alter an employers policy to ensure you receive a call back in a timely fashion. There are many things that you can control though when you are searching for a new job. To maximise your chances of getting a job offer you need to put your best foot forward. Everything you do when looking for a new role can make – or break – your job search. Here are some tips that will help you.
Do use a job search engine
There are many, many job portals available and make sure you use them. Searching for a new job is a job in itself so check your chosen job portals on a daily basis as new jobs are posted daily.
Do write a customized cover letter
Why personalize your cover letter for every job? Because you’re not just looking for any job – and you want to make sure that the employer knows it. Customise your letter every time and make sure your message is crafted specifically for the role you have applied
Do dress appropriately for an interview
When you are dressing for a job interview, image is really everything. The image you present to a potential employer is the first thing they are going to notice about you. You should present yourself smartly and professionally, casual attire is best suited for the weekend.
Don’t get to the interview to early
You should get to an interview ten minutes before you are due. No earlier and not later. If you get there too early you will make the employer feel uncomfortable and if you are late you don’t stand a chance of getting the job.
Do know what you are applying for
When you have an interview you should have a good idea of what the job you have applied for is all about and what the employer does. Google this information if you are not sure what the job entails or what the employers business is.
Do know where you are going
If you don’t want to be late for your interview you need to have researched the journey. Check out bus or train times, check what parking is available if you are driving. Whatever you do don’t be late.
Do know your CV
Your CV has got you this interview and it’s important that you know what’s in it! I know this sounds bizarre but some people never read their CV they just top it up with new jobs they have held. Read your CV before you send it out so when you are quizzed about it in an interview you’ll have an answer ready.
Do make an effort
Whilst skills and experience are important another factor that is crucial if you want to get a job offer is that the person who interviews you likes you and thinks you will fit in. A friendly, smiley, professional demeanor is crucial to interview success.
Don’t Discuss ‘Me, Me, Me’ things
In an interview it is really bad mannered and frankly worrying as far as an employer is concerned if you bring up the following issues. 1) What the salary is for the role, 2) When will your salary be reviewed 3), What is the sick pay policy 4), What are the annual holidays. These issues are only relevant if you are offered the job, ask any of them and there is a good possibility you won’t get an offer.
Do check your social media
Most employers who are considering offering you a job will checkout your social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Check your posts, make sure there is nothing being shown that will embarrass you. Social media used the wrong way can jeopardize a job offer.
So to finalise when you are looking for a new job time is at premium. Follow these basis guidelines and I’m sure you won’t be unemployed for very long.
Good luck
