On your first day in a new job it is important that you go prepared and make a positive impression.  A new employer is looking for a professional, organised and diligent new employee and you need to demonstrate these traits from day one.  Here are some tips on what to do on your first day that will impress any new boss

Identification and documentation

Bring any identification documents required by your employer, such as your driver’s license, passport, NI number or P45. You may also need to bring copies of your employment contract, offer letter, or any other relevant paperwork.  More is best here.

Contact information

Have a list of important contact information, including your Supervisor’s name and contact details, HR Department contact and emergency contact information, make sure you have this information written down for when you need it.

Notepad and pen

Take a notepad and pen to jot down important information, instructions, or any questions you may have throughout the first day. It shows that you are prepared and ready to learn.

Personal essentials

Bring personal items like a water bottle, snacks and any necessary medications. It’s also a good idea to have some cash or a credit card in case you need to buy lunch or any other items.

Professional attire

Dress appropriately according to the Company’s dress code. It’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed on your first day. Make sure your clothes are clean, ironed and very presentable.

Laptop or other devices

If your employer has provided you with a laptop or any other devices, make sure to bring them along. If not, check with your employer beforehand if you need to bring your own laptop or any other equipment.

Personal information for onboarding

Some Companies may require you to provide personal information for onboarding purposes, such as your Bank account details for payroll or emergency contact information. Check with your employer if you need to bring any such information.

Positive attitude and enthusiasm

While not a physical item, it’s crucial to bring a positive attitude and enthusiasm on your first day. Show eagerness to learn, engage with your colleagues and make a good first impression.

By being prepared and organised you will start off on the right foot in your new job.  You will make a positive impression with your bosses and with your work colleagues and hopefully this initial good impression will lead you developing a successful long term career in your new job.

Good Luck
