How to deal with a difficult boss
One of the best parts of being an adult is that for the most part we get to choose our friends and avoid our enemies. Generally when we don’t like someone we steer clear of them, however you can’t do this if you don’t like your boss. Not only can you not avoid this person, but you actually have to try to impress him or her.
Here’s how to try to stay sane:-
Make sure your boss is a “bad boss”
Observe your boss and try to notice how many things he or she does well versus poorly. Is it truly his or her fault that they are unable to manage effectively?
Bite your tongue
We highly recommend opting for a tight-lipped approach – it’s actually pretty tough to come across as “respectfully disagreeing”, it is better to say nothing
Blow off steam
Keeping your mouth shut when you’d really like to say your piece can be exhausting, take up an exercise outside work and get rid of your frustration
Be a Diplomat
Whenever your boss pushes you over the edge, choose your words carefully, make it a challenge to take the sting out of dealing with your boss, be agreeable if you can
Identifying your boss’s motivation
Try to understand why your boss does certain things, it can give you an insight into his or her management style and enable you to manage them better
Don’t let your boss affect your work
No matter how bad your boss behaviour avoid letting it affect your work, try to form relationships with other Managers in the Company and impress them
Stay one step ahead
When dealing with a micromanager, head off your boss requests by anticipating them and getting things done before they come to you – that’ll impress them
Stop assuming your boss knows everything
Just because someone has a management title doesn’t mean that they always have the right answers, stop assuming the title ‘Manager’ is equivalent to “all knowing”
Identify Triggers
If your boss has anger management problems, identify what triggers their meltdowns, it could be anything and be extra vigilant about avoiding these
Avoid future bad bosses
When seeking a new job do your research ahead of time, have a coffee with a member of staff or check out the boss on social media to discover more about them
