How to say you are leaving

Handing in your notice is an important step when resigning from a job.  It’s not an easy thing to do and can be a bit scary.  There are some steps that need to be followed, here are some tips to help you.

Review your employment contract

Take a look at your employment contract to understand the notice period required by your employer. This will determine how much notice you need to give before leaving.

Choose the right time

Select an appropriate time to have a conversation with your Manager or Supervisor. It’s best to do it in person, but if that’s not possible, a formal email or letter will suffice.

Prepare a resignation letter

Write a formal resignation letter stating your intention to leave the company. Keep it concise, professional and positive. Include the date of your last working day based on the notice period required.

Schedule a meeting

Request a meeting with your Manager to discuss your resignation. If you’re unable to meet in person, send an email to schedule a call or video conference.

Have a conversation

During the meeting, express your gratitude for the opportunities you’ve had and explain your decision to leave. Be honest but tactful about your reasons for resigning. Offer to assist with the transition and tie up any loose ends before your departure.

Remember it’s important to leave on good terms with your employer as they will be asked to provide a reference for any future job you may obtain

Good luck
